Tesla vehicles continuously monitor the health and safety of their high-voltage battery packs through the Battery Management System (BMS).
When the BMS detects a serious internal issue, it generates fault codes designed to protect both the vehicle and its occupants.
Recently, we’ve seen an increasing number of Tesla owners attempting to clear or reset BMS fault codes—particularly codes related to battery isolation, internal resistance, voltage imbalance, and battery safety warnings. While this may temporarily remove the warning from the dashboard, it does not repair the underlying problem.
In fact, resetting certain BMS faults can be one of the most dangerous things you can do to a Tesla battery pack.
The BMS Is Not the Problem
Many owners assume that if a warning can be cleared, the fault itself has been fixed. Unfortunately, that’s not how Tesla’s battery safety system works.
The BMS acts like a smoke detector. If a smoke detector goes off because there is a fire in the house, removing the batteries from the detector does not put out the fire.

Why Tesla Triggers Protective Faults
Tesla engineers designed the BMS to protect the battery from further damage.

- Place the vehicle into a protective mode
What Happens When Faults Are Cleared Without Repairs?
- The warning disappears.
- The vehicle drives normally.
- Charging may resume.
- Permanent battery damage

- Complete battery shutdown
- Loss of charging capability
- Safety risks associated with high-voltage systems
The Real Cost of Ignoring the Warning
Many Tesla battery issues start small.
A minor isolation fault, a weak brick, or a failing monitoring component can often be identified and repaired before extensive damage occurs.
When fault codes are repeatedly cleared instead of diagnosed, valuable warning time is lost. By the time the battery finally refuses to operate, the damage is frequently much more severe and expensive.
What Tesla Owners Should Do Instead
If your Tesla displays a battery-related warning:
1. Do not repeatedly clear the code.
2. Record all fault codes.
3. Perform a proper diagnostic evaluation.
4. Identify the root cause before returning the vehicle to service.
5. Repair the underlying issue rather than the symptom.

The Tesla BMS is designed to protect a battery pack worth thousands of dollars. Treating a warning light as an inconvenience rather than a safety system can result in significantly higher repair costs and, in some cases, complete battery failure.
If your Tesla has a battery warning, isolation fault, charging restriction, or BMS error, proper diagnosis should always come before fault clearing.
Ignoring the messenger doesn’t solve the problem. It only delays the inevitable.
